Abstract
Shigellosis can be controlled, only by eradication of the carrier state. As demonstrated in this review, the difficulty lies in inadequate treatment and follow-up. Eradication of the organism depends on early recognition of carriers, bacteriologic study of immediate contacts, adequate drug therapy based on culture and on specific sensitivity of the isolated organisms, and post-treatment fecal cultures.
