Abstract

In addition to fecal smears and cultures, sigmoidoscopy is an important part of the investigation of a patient with acute diarrhea. It is helpful both in diagnosis of the cause and in determining the appropriate treatment. Post-treatment fecal cultures should be obtained in all cases. Since antibiotics frequently produce gastrointestinal disorders, their use must be based on specific indications.
