Abstract
Both auscultation and palpation are important in the diagnosis of varicose veins. Use of the stethoscope is strongly advised. The various tests used in diagnosis are described. If ordinary idiopathic varicose veins are severe enough to bother the patient, high ligation and stripping should be done. However, the physician must be cautious in advising operation on secondary varicose veins, particularly the inflammatory type. The patient's history should be carefully considered.
