Abstract

Until recently, the standard electric treatment of arrhythmias was the use of short bursts of alternating current into the heart. In 1962, direct-current conversion (cardioversion) was introduced. This method appears to have certain advantages over treatment by alternating current or drugs, but its true value is yet to be determined.
