Limited Intelligence as Psychodynamic Stress in Patients With Physical Symptoms

Abstract

Present-day emphasis on intellectual accomplishment has led many persons of relatively limited intelligence to attempt to achieve social and economic positions which entail responsibilities beyond their capacity. Persons of average intelligence may overextend themselves because they are members of an above-average group. This study identifies these stresses as a cause of physical symptoms and emphasizes their importance in treating the patient.
