Abstract
Malnutrition in the tropics is caused by economic, cultural, religious and general health factors. Only in requirements for calories and water is any substantial difference found in varying climates; the basic nutrient needs remain essentially the same throughout the world. Syndromes of malnutrition are prevalent where people subsist on one staple food which does not fulfill the body's nutrient requirements.
Part 1 of this three part article reviews the problem of malnutrition in the tropics and discusses in detail the deficiency disease beriberi. Parts 2 and 3 will cover other syndromes of malnutrition.
