Abstract

Four mechanisms are suggested to cover all types of emphysema: hypoplasia, atrophy, overinflation and destruction. Three anatomic types are described, each with a characteristic distribution: centriacinar, panacinar, and periacinar or paraseptal. A classification is presented in which obstruction of the airways (the key disturbance in lung function) is the main basis of subdivision.
