Strain Gauge Plethysmography

A Diagnostic Aid in Obstructive Arterial Disease

, M.D.
Pages 451-457 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

Mercury strain gauge plethysmography offers a simple method to determine the presence or absence of arterial obstruction. Its major value lies in localizing and in establishing the extent and severity of arterial disease. Thus it is helpful in selecting patients for aortography and reconstructive surgical procedures. Vasoconstrictive, venous and neuropathic processes can be differentiated from obstructive arterial disease, making aortography unnecessary. The Plethysmograph can also serve as a monitoring device.
