Abstract

Successful management of patients with cardiac wounds requires an adequate understanding of the functional and structural changes resulting from penetrating and closed injuries. Close supervision is advised, with early consideration of surgical intervention. Cardiac tamponade may result from either a penetrating or a closed wound of the heart. In most instances of penetrating wounds or closed wounds associated with severe bleeding, surgical treatment is preferable to repeated pericardicentesis.
