Abstract
Hyperparathyroidism is a serious but treatable disorder which is encountered rather frequently in the practice of medicine. The laboratory signs are hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria, hypophosphatemia and hyperphosphaturia. Clinical manifestations are variable, reflecting effects on different organ systems (e.g., bone, kidneys). Symptoms associated with these syndromes can be attributed to increased serum calcium or urinary calcium. Surgical intervention offers the only safe treatment.
