Abstract

The striking of metal against metal is the mechanism of injury in the vast majority of cases of penetrating injuries of the eye with intraocular retention of foreign material. Early diagnosis is relatively simple if an appropriate plan of investigation is followed routinely. Roentgenologic study would seem to be the most commonly omitted feature. Following emergency treatment including institution of antitetanus and antibiotic therapy, the patient should be referred to an ophthalmologist without delay.
