Abstract

We need to distinguish between minor and major tranquilizers. Treatment with the minor tranquilizers is really a continuation of the phenobarbital or amobarbital sodium type of treatment. The neuroleptics or major tranquilizers are much more potent agents with many more side effects and with no distinct predecessors. Participation by general practitioners in treating mental illness is emphasized.
