Abstract
Certain benign and malignant conditions often require hysterectomy. Among the benign conditions are inflammatory disease, neoplasm, structural and physiologic incompetence, accidents of pregnancy, and hemorrhage. The malignant diseases may be gynecologic or nongynecologic. Whenever possible, the physician should attempt to preserve uterine integrity, particularly if the patient is less than 35 years old and has not yet completed her family. However, this should not be done at the expense of the patient's general well-being.
