Abstract

Autoantibodies may develop against denatured or normal tissue components. In some instances, these autoantibodies seem to occur as a result of tissue damage; in others, they may appear without known antecedent tissue damage. In either case, an immunologic contribution to disease may evolve. The mechanisms by which immunologic factors contribute to disease are being clarified in the laboratory and are providing major bases for our understanding of auto- sensitivity diseases.
