Thyroid Function Tests

Physiologic Basis and Clinical Interpretation

, M.D.
Pages 129-137 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

None of the generally available thyroid function tests (1131 uptake, PBI, serum T3 binding, B.M.R.) measures the function of the gland directly, and all may be influenced by changes other than altered thyroid function. The tests may also be affected by the use of any of a wide variety of drugs. Proper interpretation can be made only if the physiologic basis of the tests is understood and the effect of non-thyroidal factors is kept in mind.
