Abstract
The word “memory” encompasses a complex series of operations, ranging from an individual's primary response to a stimulus to the final reactivation, or decoding, of retrieved material. Malfunction or breakdown of one mechanism can impair the functioning of the entire memory process. Memory defects of differing degree are apparent in the elderly and vary with the mechanism affected. “Cue remembering' often plays an important role in the memory process of the aged person after the recall mechanism of retrieval no longer functions.
