Abstract
The three main branches of dietetics are dietotherapy, teaching of nutrition, and food administration. Although oversimplifying, one may say that the therapeutic dietitian is a specialist in a medical science, the teaching dietitian is an educator, and the administrative dietitian is a manager. Failure to recognize these differences leads to frequent underutilization and misuse of competent professionals. Looking to the future, the author advocates recruiting persons with more varied college backgrounds and emphasizing graduate rather than undergraduate training.
