Abstract

Hypertension secondary to renovascular disease may be completely reversible by surgical treatment. Selection of candidates for operation provides a formidable challenge. Experience indicates that both renal arteriography and measurement of function of the individual kidneys are essential. Although medical treatment can be equally effective in decreasing the blood pressure, progressive ischemic atrophy of the kidneys may occur.
