The Cook County Hospital Emergency Department

New Methods to Meet Changing Needs

Abstract

Today the emergency departments of hospitals are providing more medical care than ever before for a vast number of persons with nonurgent, chronic disabling disease. This has resulted in acute overcrowding and a shortage of personnel. Handling the increased load by means of the triage system has proved helpful to both Cook County Hospital and its patients.

Hospital administrators and emergency department physicians should recognize this new trend in medical care and should become an active part of community health planning.
