Possible Immune Mechanisms in Ulcerative Colitis

Abstract

Objective evidence of an auto-immune mechanism in ulcerative colitis is lacking but available information seems to justify continued investigation of the question. This report concerns the nature of the tissue reaction in the disease, the basis for considering an immune mechanism, observations indicating that the colon can generate an immune reaction, efforts to obtain direct evidence of an immune mechanism, and the type of mechanism that might be postulated.
