The Pituitary Gland

Relation to Aging and Diseases of Old Age

Abstract

In cases of Simmonds' disease in which the anterior pituitary gland is destroyed, the aging process appears to be accelerated. However, this is clearly not the physiologic mechanism of aging in man, as there is little or no evidence of pituitary deficiency in elderly persons. Many studies carried out in laboratory animals have indicated that pituitary hormones may be necessary for development of aging changes and the diseases of old age.
