Abstract

In recent years the intrauterine contraceptive device has been recognized as an important means of family planning and population control. Its effectiveness exceeds that of traditional contraceptive methods but is less than that of oral contraceptives. The exact mechanism of contraception with the intrauterine device remains unknown. Although the method has definite advantages, particularly in certain patient populations, it is not without complications.
