Abstract

In any case of open fracture the surgeon should choose the simplest method of reduction and immobilization which he thinks will accomplish early and complete rehabilitation with minimal risk. Prompt and adequate care of the wound is of primary importance, and associated injuries may have therapeutic priority. Adherence to fundamental principles will give the greatest assurance of a favorable outcome. General principles are reviewed in relation to the patient, the wound, the fracture, and the recovery.
