Abstract
The school lunch program has become basic to the nutrition of a large percentage of schoolchildren in the United States as well as an important educational tool in nutrition. The history of the school lunch is reviewed and today's nutritional standards described. It is noted that many children in poor rural or slum areas still do not receive the benefits of the school lunch program. This is a matter of concern for the pediatrician and the general practitioner since nutrition and nutrition education are so important in the health and well-being of the nation's children.
