Urine Sediment

Exploring the Body Sea With a Microscope

, M.D.
Pages 148-155 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

Laboratory technicians often are more concerned with identifying crystals than with recognizing casts in urine sediment. For this reason, the physician himself should examine the sediment.

Certain formed elements are normal in urine, and amorphous debris is frequently seen. These should be differentiated from abnormal findings.

The various casts found in urine and their significance are discussed. The importance of recognizing red cell casts is particularly emphasized.
