Abstract

Muscle biopsy can be very useful in sorting out the various neuromuscular diseases, especially with the application of simple histochemistry. In a few instances the results are diagnostic of a specific disease, and in most others they indicate the general type of disease process. Always they must be correlated with the results of other studies. Technical points, some sources of misinterpretation, general types of muscle reactions, features of neuropathy and myopathy, and clinical applications are included in the discussion.
