Fibrinolytic Disorders in Obstetrics

Abstract

Widespread intravascular coagulation follows the release of thromboplastic substance into the circulation. Obstetric accidents (abruptio placentae, fetal demise, amniotic fluid embolism) are especially likely to initiate widespread coagulation. This coagulation leads to hypofibrinogenemia. Often, excess fibrinolysis will also begin as these obstetric accidents lead to excessive activation of the fibrinolytic system. Therapy begins with anticipatory management of high-risk patients.
