Jaundice and Liver Disease in Infancy and Childhood

, M.D.

Abstract

Nonobstructive jaundice in the neonate is “physiologic” in most cases. Operative cholangiography for the purpose of differentiating between neonatal hepatitis and atresia of the bile ducts as causes of obstructive jaundice in the neonate is best postponed until the infant is three to four months old. Infectious hepatitis is the most common hepatic disease in older infants and children.
