Osteoporosis and Fluoride Deficiency

Abstract

Studies in Massachusetts and Texas and more recently in North Dakota have offered evidence that fluoride deficiency is probably the most important etiologic factor in the development of osteoporosis. The North Dakota study also revealed a significantly lower incidence of calcification of the aorta in men living in areas where the water supply has a high fluoride content. Other possible etiologic factors in osteoporosis, such as racial and national origin, degree of physical activity, and nutrition, particularly intake of calcium, are also considered.
