Neonatal Meningitis

Abstract

The mortality and morbidity of meningitis in the newborn remain high. Signs and symptoms are vague and nonspecific, so that early diagnosis rests on a high index of suspicion, careful clinical evaluation, and lumbar puncture and analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid. Once the diagnosis is certain, immediate and intensive treatment including appropriate antibiotic therapy is mandatory.
