Abstract

Surgery is the treatment of choice for most patients with thyroid disease. It is the best treatment for large nodular goiter, especially if the goiter has become intrathoracic, and also for most patients with Graves' disease who are less than 45 years old. It is the only curative treatment for thyroid cancer.
