Abstract

Total therapy for arthritis should include physical, medical and, when indicated, surgical treatment. Objectives of physical treatment are to cure the disease or stop its progress, to relieve pain, and to maintain or restore function. Unfortunately there are no known methods for curing rheumatoid arthritis. The disease runs a prolonged course, often exhibiting remissions and exacerbations, and eventually the acute process becomes quiescent.
