Abstract
Variations in physical appearance and rate of maturation can cause a great deal of anxiety and unhappiness in the adolescent who perceives his development as being different from that of others his own age. The physician should be prepared to reassure these adolescents that such variations are only temporary.
Part 1 of this article will discuss general adolescent growth and developmental variations that are most disturbing to boys. Part 2, which will be published next month, will discuss variations that are most disturbing to girls.
