How Kidneys Function in Pregnancy

Abstract

During pregnancy kidneys have increased plasma flow and glomerular filtration rate in the first two trimesters; are more likely to excrete glucose, lactose and protein, have dilated pelves and ureters; are influenced by hormonal changes; and are more prone to pyelonephritis and acute insufficiency.
