Pages 199-203 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

Calcium is one of the most important bivalent cations involved in life processes. In addition to the amount of calcium in the diet, the presence of nonabsorbable calcium compounds, various sugars, amino acids, hormones and vitamins, particularly vitamin D, and the physiologic state of the organism all influence calcium absorption. Absorption rates differ in various parts of the gastrointestinal tract, but the exact mechanism(s) of calcium absorption is unknown.
