Abstract

Poorly defined normal values seriously limit the usefulness of clinical laboratory analyses. The conception of the normal state is of ten confused with the “ideal” state. In the future more than one reference standard may be used. Electronic data processing should greatly facilitate the effort to establish normal values and appropriate methods of deriving them.
