Abstract
Discovery of electrophoretic mobility of hemoglobins in 1949 ushered in the era of molecular disease. Two unequal pairs of polypeptide chains make up hemoglobin molecules. The α-chain contains 141 amino acids and the β-chain, 146 amino acids, and substitution of one amino acid for another will produce clinical disease.
