Abstract

Weight reduction is an important aspect of therapy for the obese diabetic. If diet alone proves ineffective and an orally administered hypoglycemic agent is needed, phenformin hydrochloride is the drug of choice because it does not promote deposit of fat. However, a sulfonylurea drug is indicated for the diabetic patient whose weight is normal or below normal.
