Models of Auto-Immunity

Spontaneous Diseases of Lower Animals

Abstract

Six naturally occurring diseases of lower animals are discussed in relation to their ultimate value as experimental models of human disease. In the ideal animal model, a specific auto-immune disease develops spontaneously and runs its full course within a relatively short period. Use of these models may help clarify the relationships between auto-immunity, neoplasia and infectious disease.
