Abstract
Although it occurs in cases of rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis is more likely to be familial, and only 4 percent of patients have positive rheumatoid factors. Whatever its genesis, it is incurable and produces a stiff spine in 10 to 20 years. Aspirin or indomethacin, heat, bed positioning, exercises for range of motion and posture, and deep-breathing exercises can all be used to help the patient.
