Abstract

No matter of what material braces are made—steel, aluminum, copper beryllium, leather or plastic—they should accomplish certain purposes. They may be designed to substitute for weak or paralyzed muscles, to limit motion, to prevent or correct deformity, or to improve the patient's appearance. When prescribing braces, physicians should see that the brace is designed to fulfill one of these purposes.
