When Alcoholics Stop Drinking

, M.D.
Pages 119-123 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

Within 24 hours after they withdraw from drink, alcoholics may start to tremble, become nauseated, be unable to sleep, turn pale or faint while upright, and become angry or hostile. Because of withdrawal seizures, delirium tremens or toxic encephalopathy, they may then convulse, hallucinate and have fever and tachycardia. Withdrawal syndromes are often mixed, and it is difficult to diagnose a specific single syndrome.
