Abstract
What events that occur during pregnancy can cause congenital heart disease? Not all facts are in, but it is certain that first-trimester rubella, thalidomide ingestion, excessive vitamin D intake, and maternal phenylketonuria can lead to cardiac defects in the unborn infant. To help prevent defects, physicians should discourage self-medication, recommend proper doses of vitamins, and encourage good prenatal care.
