Abstract

When the parathyroids produce inadequate hormone, many organ systems malfunction, primarily because of hypocalcemia and its attendant metabolic changes. Patients may exhibit tetany, neurologic abnormalities, and changes in skin, hair and teeth. Electroencephalograms and electrocardiograms may show abnormalities. Some patients become infected with Candida, and others have chronic diarrhea.
