Abstract

When antidiuretic hormone is secreted inappropriately, patients have low serum sodium without clinical evidence of sodium depletion or edema, have urine that is hypertonic to serum despite normal renal function, show normal adrenocortical function, excrete sodium despite hyponatremia, and improve when fluids are restricted. The syndrome may be associated with malignancies, central nervous system disorders, or pulmonary infections.
