Lecture 19: Lower-Extremity Amputations and Prosthetics

Surgical Considerations [First of Three Parts]

Pages 259-264 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

A patient must be prepared for a prosthesis before the surgeon amputates. This includes selecting a proper bed, instructions on how to exercise, explaining precisely what will be done, allaying anxiety about aftereffects, and describing types of prostheses. Good postoperative care—bandaging, stump shrinking, exercising—are also essential before the prosthesis is fitted.
