Abstract

Physicians should treat gout with these goals in mind: to prevent acute attacks, to ward off joint damage, and to protect against kidney dysfunction. Most patients will respond to probenecid, but some, especially those with poor renal function, require sulfinpyrazone. Allopurinol is also useful. It prevents and helps resolve uric acid calculi.
