When adequate medical management of the rheumatoid arthritic patient proves ineffective, surgery is often indicated. The most promising surgical procedure is synovectomy. Wider and earlier use of synovectomy in all surgically accessible joints will probably be the greatest contribution of orthopedic surgery in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
