Abstract

When a person dies, those closest to him usually respond by going through a grief process. First, they are shocked, then awareness of the consequences develops, and finally they adjust to the new circumstances and the grief resolves. The physician who understands this process can help shorten the period of grieving, and soften its disabling effects.
