Abstract

What role should government play in medicine? If government starts to promote “the general welfare” through federal programs, will it end by controlling medical practice? Will it dehumanize physician-patient relationships? Will it, in the name of economy, downgrade quality of care? Or will it compassionately guarantee full benefits of modern medicine to all? The answers, as set forth here, differ.
